It’s a New Year and the calendar tells us it is time for a new start. I do not subscribe to that, I believe you can take any opportunity to improve yourself and your expectations. Whenever you find your personal bliss is when I recommend you should time to visit. Personally, I find caring for my skin exhilarating and if you do too, then you must visit The Dermatology and Laser Group at 200 West 57th Street in New York City.
While NYC has some of the best dermatology, finding them is not always easy and all dermatologists and spas are not created equal. I receive several inquiries a week on where I recommend getting laser treatments, Botox®, or skin rejuvenation services and decided it time to share.
Arash Akhavan, MD, FAAD is a board- certified dermatologist and recipient of Castle Connolly Top Doctor Award Winner 2017. 2016, 2015, and 2014. He is Founder and Director, Dermatology.
He was amongst the first to bring in technologies such as SculpSure for Body Sculpting and Cellfina® for cellulite to the NYC area. Akhavan also has expertise in the use of Botox®, Juvederm®, Restylyne® and Radiesse® (to name a few in the filler family, and a variety of chemical peels. He has also received specialized training in Digital Mole Analysis. In short, he has founded a practice that is one stop for medical and cosmetic dermatology.
Botox® known for its facial rejuvenation qualities is used to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, dropping corners of the mouth and undereye wrinkles. Allergan, the company that owns Botox® has somewhere around 800 patents for its potential uses, both medical and cosmetic. In more recent years Botox® has been used to help with excessive sweating and chronic migraines. Neck spasms, vocal chords and overactive bladder also benefit from Botox® and currently Allergan is running tests to learn if Botox can help with the treatment of depression. Personally, I just think Botox® is fabulous and Dr. Akhavan is a magician in application for the natural, “YOU (only a little more rested)” look.
Full Body Skin Tightening
TempSure™, Envi System by Cynosure is the world’s first full body skin tightening system, cleared by the FDA. The device uses radiofrequency to minimize lines and wrinkles and tightens the skin through soft tissue coagulation to improve the appearance of cellulite. The Dermatology and Laser Group is one of the first centers to offer this service. I spoke with a client during my visit who had just had the one-hour treatment and I was told that it is not painful. One will feel heat and some pressure that could be compared to a hot stone massage. Duration of treatment will depend on application location and individuals desired results. A consultation will determine if this is right for you. The treatment is an option for combating signs of aging for those who are not interested in needles or surgery.
PicoSure tattoo removal is a new laser that allows dermatologists to remove tattoos in a picosecond, a trillionth of a second. This supersedes the Q-Switch laser which releases energy in a billionth of a second. The PicoSure is the fastest laser in the world of dermatology and that is important to you because a faster laser emits less heat, resulting in less skin damage and scarring. The picosecond laser breaks skin into smaller pieces yielding shorter treatment times and a more complete removal. I am not going to tell you that it is not a little uncomfortable but getting the tattoo on your body didn’t tickle either, so we have to set a fair expectation.
Digital Mole Mapping
While all of the cosmetic services are fun, I can not stress enough the importance of getting your moles checked regularly and removed when necessary. This falls under the “medical” category and can save your life.
For higher risk patients, Digital Mole Mapping, which pairs total body high-definition photography of your moles with digital dermoscopy. Once moles have been photographed atypical moles can be tracked with a specialized lens through a process called Digital Dermoscopy. Digital Dermoscopy has the potential to find melanoma in earlier stages and possibly cut down on the number of skin biopsies. Treatments for acne, acne scarring, eczema and skin allergies are just some of the other options to satisfy your dermatological medical needs.

Also available is the NEOCUTIS product line, only available through authorized medical and skincare providers. NEOCUTIS, Inc. was founded in 2003 following years of wound healing research conducted at the University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland.
In 2005, patented PSP®, Processed Skin Proteins technology was introduced to assist with anti-aging and post-procedure skincare. An intensive study of skin pigmentation led to the formulation of MELAPLEX® allowing use of Hydroquinone-free skin brightening, allowing for an alternative to product to improve the overall appearance and pigmentation of the skin.
ROSAPLEX® entered the NEOCUTIS journey in 2013 to provide an aid in balancing the skin and VITAPLEX C ® followed in 2013 to provide anti-oxidants helping prevent skin from free radicals. In 2015 NEOCUTIS created the MPC™, Micro Protein Complex, an anti-aging technology which addresses Collagens I, II, VII, Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid.
