Time to Tackle that Holiday Weight that Sneaked Up on You
For some, exercise is a daily part of a daily routine, whether fueled by a love of fitness or the mental and physical benefits. Others have trouble making time. The reasons vary from disliking exercise to time constraints from hectic work, travel and family schedules.
If you fall in to the category of the latter, read on for the solutions….
Thanks to the digital world, livestream and on-demand options are more abundant and accessible than ever before; and have we found the workout for you. AKT On-Demand is all you need for a full body, time saving, endorphin inducing workout that requires little to no equipment and the option to take your workout on the go, anytime, anywhere. How easy is that?
What is AKT?
AKTechnique created by Anna Kaiser is a Dance Cardio workout that is efficient and entertaining. Anna is the Celebrity Trainer responsible for the strong, lean physiques of Shakira (whose hips don’t lie), Karlie Kloss, Kelly Ripa and Hilary Duff.
A former professional dancer with credits including a role as a Principal Dancer in Disney’s ‘Enchanted’, Kaiser has a lengthy fitness resume from Reebok Sports Club/NY (now part of Equinox) and Tracy Anderson’s. You may have heard of Anderson, a Leading Lady in the Cardio Dance scope, whose clients include entertainment leading ladies such as Molly Sims, Gwenyth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian. Kaiser served as Anderson’s Chief Content Officer.
In 2013, Kaiser, named by ‘Well And Good’ as the “fitness version of Prozac” (because you feel so amazing after class), opened her first New York Studio which catapulted her to the prestigious ranks of Anderson and Simone de la Rue. In case you are not sure who Simone is, she is an extraordinary talent, whose ‘Body By Simone’ clients include Reese Witherspoon and Luciana Barroso. In a city of dancers and fitness professionals, this is a tremendous success.
Over the past four years, Kaiser has opened two studios in NYC: one in the Hamptons, one in New Haven, CT and a Los Angeles post.
Classes have boisterous titles such as “Sweet Dream,” “Happy Hour,” and “Mixer.” The content of the classes vary, but do not let the titles fool you. These classes mean business for your body.
AND the studios have disco balls.
Who does not want to work out and dance in dim lighting with a disco ball?
I am sold.
The Studio Experience
I had the pleasure of attending the Upper East Side Studio where classes are $38 for the one-hour session. I was advised by Anna’s Studio Director to try the “Happy Hour” and I was hooked.
The studio is pristine, the choreography and music are fun, high energy and easy to follow. If you are not a dancer, do not worry; most in class are not. The instructors have you covered with sequences that keep your heart rate up and your feet from tripping over each other.
Class choreography is repeated for weeks at a time, so as you learn a routine, the workouts become more intense.
Intervals of cardio dance with leg, arm and abs work, using your own body weight and a towel make this a lower impact option, to gain strength and shed calories.
Most importantly, I had FUN.
With a disco ball!
The next day I was sore in all the right places.
The disco ball was an added bonus, as I can’t think of a better way to start the day than to dance in the dark with the lights from a disco ball.
Did I mention the disco ball?
But, maybe you can’t make it to the studios…..
As is the case for most, time is limited and while I was hooked on the workout and the results that I noticed quickly, making the trip to the studio was just not working with my schedule.
But, no excuses, Anna has me and you covered.
AKT On-Demand, available to download in one easy App is just $39.95 per month and allows you to bring the studio to your home.
The workouts require that you have a towel and a comfortable support for your knees. That is all. No weights, no machines, no excuses.
The App is about as easy as can be and is broken down into segments such as “Beginner Series” and “Advanced Series.” You can also find options such as “Lower Body,” which contains videos that are 10-20 minutes in length, “Dance,” which are 45-60 minutes in length or “HIIT” (High Intensity Interval Training), which run between 30-60 minutes.
She also includes “Lifestyle” options, which offer nutritional guidance, because let’s face it, if you do the workout but eat a bag of cookies, what was the point?
I have been using the App regularly and can attest that the experience is just like in-studio, but on my own schedule, and on my own terms.
While you do not get the camaraderie and corrections that you experience in the studio, you do get the awesome instructors and routines that provide an excellent alternative for when you are on-the-go, or just not close enough to make it to the studio. Pricing for in-studio classes vary by location.

In good health.
